Who's been the star pupil of
the D.A. classes? If you said Neville you'd be right. I think we can expect
great things from Neville Longbottom.
Dean shares his dorm room with Harry. His favorite muggle sports team plays
soccer, not Quidditch. And his heart belongs to Ginny Weasley, if only during
HBP.
Although he always thought
his parents were both muggles, it seems that his real father, not his step-dad,
was a wizard. That makes him a half-blood.
If he were an Oxford or
Cambridge Dean he'd be highly respected for his academic knowledge. Let's hope
our Hogwarts' Dean is of the same ilk but with an emphasis on spells rather than
spelling.
Lucius Malfoy, Wormtail, Crabbe Sr., Goyle Sr., Dolohov, Avery, Nott, McNair,
Bellatrix Lestrange, Rodolphus Lestrange, Rabastan Lestrange, Rookwood, Barty
Croutch Jr. (Soulless), Karkaroff (dead ex-death Eater). There should be
another 14 not counting Snape, whom we trust per Dumbledore, and who has left
their ranks forever. Or has he?
Dennis is Colin's little
brother... and that means he really is little! He's got a good rapport with the
giant squid in the lake; well at least it tossed him back into the boat so the
tiny Creevey wouldn't drown. Being on good terms with the creatures of the deep
can't hurt in the dark days ahead. Not sure what else could be in store for
Dennis but I'm sure his slightly bigger brother will be keeping his eye on him.
DOBBY
The
rebel house elf with a cause. Dobby is completely devoted to Harry and that’s
good because one really wouldn’t want to be his enemy. We know that house elves
have their own kind of powerful magic. They don’t need wands to cast their
spells. Moreover, they can apparate and disapparate inside the Hogwarts
castle and grounds whereas no witch or wizard can, as Hermione diligently keeps
reminding us. And they are great cooks!
Dobby knows many Malfoy family secrets and
someday he may divulge some of these gems to Harry to help in the fight against
the Dark Lord. And speaking of the Malfoys, since Dobby left their employ
they’ve had to wash their own dirty laundry. But is that Kreacher I hear
talking to Narcissa? I wonder if Dobby and Kreacher will face off down the
line. Yup.
How did house elves become servants to
wizards, anyway? It seems to me that the magic the house elves can perform may
be more powerful than wizard magic, unless you happen to be Dumbledore or Harry
(in the future). What is the bond that ties the house elves to wizards? I can
understand that wizards may have felt threatened by such powerfully magical
creatures and so devised a way to make the house elves subservient... I just
can't figure out how they did it. Any ideas?
Dobby and Dumbledore have at least have 2 things in common besides the fact that
their names both begin with "D.” They both discovered the Room of Requirement
and told Harry about it, and they both like SOCKS. That can’t be just another
coincidence.
Dobby is looking after Winky, Barty
Croutch’s sacked house elf. Good house elf, Dobby.

DRACO MALFOY

The Prince of Smirk… Always an annoying thorn in Harry's side, is Draco really
just a spineless lizard? Hiiissssss. He hides behind his brainless cronies,
Crabbe and Goyle, and uses his father's money to buy his reputation. I think he
should ask for his money back because his reputation stinks like a dungbomb. I
am sure the day will come when Harry and Draco face off but just how that will
take place I haven't a clue... yet. Ron and Hermione may or may not be the
reason for the final showdown, however. We know how Draco feels about both of
Harry's best friends and that if he could arrange their demise without rubbing
skin off of his own pointy nose, he would.
Draco’s dreams of success and grandeur are big, indeed, but are they too big for
young Malfoy’s robes? He’s smart and much better at Occlumency than Harry, but
I just don’t think his heart’s completely evil. He just doesn’t fit the m.o. of
Death-Eater. And that could be his downfall. Yet, perhaps based on his actions
at the end of HBP there’s hope for Draco yet. He might end up in the same boat
as Regulas, but that could be a good thing for Harry while being a bad thing for
Voldemort.
UNCLE VERNON
Vernon sounds a lot like vermin and Harry’s
Uncle is just a big rat with a walrus mustache. Although he spouts like a whale
at Harry all the time about what Harry can or cannot do, etc., Uncle Vernon is
just really full of hot air. (Must run in the family… Aunt Marge.) He’s really
afraid of Harry’s magical abilities and backs off when threatened. And even
though he is a big guy it’s Aunt Petunia who really carries the weight in the
Dursley family. In the end, Vernon bows to her final word on a situation
including not throwing Harry out of the house in OotP.
AUNT PETUNIA
Is Lily Dursley Harry’s secret keeper? Or is Dumbledore a secret keeper for #4
Privet Drive, where Lily, being Harry's only blood relative, lives? I don’t
think so.
Petunia Evans Dursley is Harry’s aunt and was his mother, Lily’s, sister. She
has always regarded Harry with resentful disgust and along with her husband,
goes out of her way to treat Harry as if he were a slug needing squashed but
afraid to actually step on it for the mess it would make. Petunia holds her
sister in contemptuous regard for being a witch. Was this because Petunia is
prejudiced against anyone who’s not a normal muggle or is it because she
herself isn’t a normal witch? Could Petunia be a Squib? According to
J.K. Rowling she's not.
Petunia knows so much about Azkaban, the Dementors, and is so fearful that
Voldemort is back. Yes, I know she told Vernon that she'd overheard "that Potter
boy" tell her sisiter about the Dementors and Azkaban but that doesn't mean she
didn't know about them just a little before that. Is her nasty cold demeanor
wilting just a teensy-weensy bit? Harry is amazed at what his aunt reveals in
OotP and wonders what else she knows. I am wondering too. If she's not a
Squibb and she's not a witch or maybe even a muggle then what else could she
be? But I still think there’s somthing about Petunia that has yet to be
revealed to Harry and to us, the readers.
Dumbledore sent Petunia a howler in OotP. It simply bellowed, "Remember my
last." Talk about cryptic messages! It is undoubtedly referring the last letter
he sent to her, the one that was attached to Harry’s baby blanket 14 years
before. But are we sure? Does last mean his last letter, his last
instructions, or his last warning? Has he been in communication with Petunia
since Harry was a baby? After all, Harry says that Dumbledore knows more ways
to get a message to someone than owl post. Well, Jo has said that Dumbledore's
letter addressed to Petunia was the one pinned to Harry's blanket until the
Howler... but had there been communication before that. Did he send her a
letter when Lily was killed? Had he even sent her a letter, if she really is a
witch incognito, to attend Hogwarts too? Sigh...
When Uncle Vernon orders Harry to leave and never darken their doorstep again
Petunia overrules her husband's demand. She seems to know enough about
Dumbledore to heed his mysterious words. Is she afraid of him? Probably yes
since she knows how powerful a wizard he is. Does she also know that Dumbledore
is the only wizard Voldemort ever feared? I’ll bet my Firebolt she does. She’s
definitely going to do what Dumbledore says.
DUDLEY DURSLEY
Yes, we can all agree that Harry’s cousin in a DUD. But what’s that mean,
really? In the muggle world he’s not exactly bright, although he’s very cunning
and knows how to spin his web around his parents with great finesse. Will his
boxing skills be tested again before the end of the series? As the books
progress we see less and less Harry’s muggle relatives. I know he’s happy about
that, but I do hope we get to see Dudders in one final moment of humility before
the last chapter of the last book.
Let’s look at Dudders from another point of view. I may be scraping the bottom
of the cauldron but could he be a Squib? Once again J.K.R. says no. If he
were, though, that would qualify him as a dud in the magical community too.
Here's an interesting correlation: Three of Harry's antagonists in the muggle
world are:
Vernon, Petunia, and Dudley
Three antagonists in the magical world are:
Voldemort, Pettigrew, and Draco
THE FATE OF THE DURSLEYS
Will the Dursleys be in danger in the dark days to come? Yup. Pretty good odds
they’ll be added to the muggle rare and endangered species list.
Will Harry go out of his way to save them? Yes, he will. That’s our boy’s m.o.
Will Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, and Dudders finally be grateful Harry is
related to them? This may be given grudgingly but I think the answer is yes,
once he saves their backsides from extinction.
