A Ravenclaw student and Prefect in Harry's 5th year at school. She also a member of the D.A. (OotP). Hannah’s little brother is fatally attacked by Fenrir Greyback, a vicious and evil werewolf in HBP. Will Hannah come back to Hogwarts? We’ll have to wait and see.
Rubeus Hagrid is a giant of a man... or half-giant anyway (GoF). He's really just a big teddy bear and, in fact, reminds me in many ways of Bjorn, the giant man-by-day, bear-by-night protector of animals in Tolkien's "The Hobbit." Which makes me ask, is Hagrid another secret Animagus? He wouldn't be registered if he were an Animagus because since he was 13 he has not been allowed to officially use magic. Of course, Dumbledore would know for sure, but nobody else, not even Hermione. Although, if Hagrid is a big bear then Hermione probably figured it out in her first year at Hogwarts. At the end of CoS, with his name being cleared of all charges regarding the Chamber of Secrets, Hagrid should be allowed to do magic. He is, after all, given the Care of Magical Creatures teaching position at the beginning of PoA. But his wand was broken when he was expelled as a child. He still has it, of course, hidden in his pink umbrella (PS/SS). I'm wondering if he will ever get a new wand. One of Hagrid's best monster friends is the giant spider, Aragog, much to Ron’s fearful amazement. Aragog is an ancient and revered spider among his fellow arachnids, but greatness doesn’t guarantee immortality for spiders or humans… or even those you once were human. Hagrid's mother was the giantess, Friedwolfa, and at the end of term in GoF Hagrid and Madame Maxime take to the hills (big ones) in search of the last remaining Giant tribes. In OotP Hagrid tells Harry all about this mission to win the giants' favor and so entice them to join Dumbledore against Voldemort. It doesn't sound like it was too successful, but Hagrid is still happy because he has found out that he's got a little brother! Grawp, who at a mere sixteen feet is considered on the runty side for a giant is lying low (at least while he's asleep) in the Forbidden Forest. Hagrid introduces Harry and Hermione to Grawpy and it's clear the friendly giant takes a liking to them. When Hagrid tells Harry he wants to find a girlfriend for his little brother, Harry is less than thrilled. Just wait until the Centaurs find out. At the end of HBP, Hagrid should be congratulated for his half-brother’s impressive transformation. Grawp behavior and dress suit give him an air of, if not normality, then at least civility. Another thing about giants is their tougher than tough skin that pretty much acts like a shield against stunning spells and worse. In regards to Hagrid, Grawp, and Madame Maxime, that’s reassuring… wish I could say the same about the other giants. Hagrid now has a girlfriend of his own, Madame Maxime (GoF). Hearts, flowers, and axel grease abound.
HARRY POTTERTEN THINGS HARRY DISCOVERS IN "HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS" 10 - Gilderoy Lockhart is a fake and didn’t actually do any of the things he wrote about in his books. No surprise there. 9 - Harry discovers what a Mudblood is. Ron reveals a mouthful, not counting the slugs. 8 - Ginny Weasley fancy’s him. One of these days Harry will finally fancy Ginny. 7 - Gilderoy Lockhart is an expert at wiping out people's memories with his memory charms. Was he anywhere near the Longbottoms when Neville was a baby? 6 - Dobby was the Malfoy’s House Elf. Let’s hear it for grungy socks and freedom. 5 - Draco Malfoy is the not the Heir of Sytherin. He’s still a snake. 4 - Phoenix tears have the power to heal. Harry can vouch for this miraculous cure twice. 3 - Tom Riddle and Lord Voldemort are one and the same and both are the heir of Slytherin And there’s not one good thing I can say about either of them. 2 - – Hagrid was innocent. He’s also a half-blood and I wouldn’t be surprised if mummy wasn’t Queen of the Giants. And the Number One thing Harry discovered… – Harry learns for the first time that he is a Parseltongue. It really helps to be bilingual, especially when your worst enemy's pet is a snake. Alternate Number One thing he discovered: 1a - – Diary’s contain more than just memories... Before he attacked Harry, Voldemort had figured out a way to keep himself alive far and above normal means. So when his Killing Curse aka Adava Kedavra rebounded on him in his attempt to kill Harry, Voldemort did not die. He's not alive like other humans but he survived. (Note the words to the Prophesy). If he transferred some of his powers to Harry that infamous night, did he also transfer some of his immortality? Granted, Lily's love protected Harry and continues to be the magical force field surrounding him. Yet what if, throughout his many life-threatening escapades and battles, Harry has inadvertently added more ways to battle mortality? In PS/SS Harry has the Stone in his pocket when Quirrell/Voldemort tries to kill him. Dumbledore comes to the rescue in the nick of time but could it be that while the Stone was in Harry's possession it granted him immortality for that time? In CoS, Harry is impaled by one of the Basilisk's deadly poisonous fangs. Fawkes heals him with Phoenix tears but the poison is still in Harry's body, and now he may have developed immunity to it, as well as now possessing healing Phoenix tears in his blood. In the maze in GoF, the Giant Spider wounds Harry but he doesn't die, and later Fawkes again heals him with Phoenix Tears. So now he has Spider venom in him and a double dose of Phoenix Tears. It looks to me like he is building up a big immunity shield here. Tom Riddle made the choice to become a bad wizard. He took the dark path. Light and dark are all part of the same circle. Voldemort represents the darkest side of existence therefore Harry must represent the lightest side. Classic good versus evil, white versus black, and in this case, birth, life and renewal versus death, destruction and extinction. Who really will attain immortality? It’s not a question of attainment. Since birth Harry has faced death and survived several times; remember he is “the boy who lived.” I can compare Godric’s Hollow to a Phoenix. It burst into flames and fell to ashes but emerging unscathed from the ashes was the baby Harry. As Harry grows he learns that he alone must carry the burden of saving the world from Voldemort’s terror. I wonder over whose possibly fatal wounds he will shed tears and if they will heal them? He is, after all, the human form of Fawkes, the immortal firebird. Harry can conjure a full corporeal Patronus to fight 100 Dementors. What else can Patronus' do? Dumbledore sent his Patronus to fetch Hagrid in GoF. Harry can resist the Imperious Curse. He seems to be able to ignore the effects of the Veela (although Ron apparently is still susceptible). He may be immune to snake and spider venom. By then end of GoF, Harry knows several hexes and jinxes, having learned them in preparation for the third task of the Tri-Wizard Tournament. In OotP, he teaches them to his fellow students, members of the D.A. aka Dumbledore's Army. In HBP, Harry learns more hexes, in addition to perfect potions, from the mysterious Half-Blood Prince. He dreams what is presently happening (if it involves Voldemort). But I think he can also see the future whether it has anything to do with Voldemort or not. In the PoA movie he saw Sirius calling to him from the Crystal Ball. That wasn't in the PoA book. Is that a reference to contacting Sirius in HBP? I think so, by maybe using the mirror Sirius gave to him in OotP; although Harry may have to use the reparo charm on the mirror to make it whole again. Also, in PoA, Harry did accurately predict/guess that Buckbeak wouldn't be executed and would fly away. Maybe it's a good guess because it was what he "desired," but I think there's more to what Harry "knows" than even he knows.
Will Harry always need his wand to perform magic? No. Most wizards, including Voldemort, need a wand to perform more difficult spells. Voldemort makes a point of this in GoF when he is explaining that without his wand he was helpless after his curse against Harry backfired. (By the way, where's his wand been all these years and how did he get it back? Was Wormtail also at the Potter's house that fateful night and picked it up after all of the dust settled, keeping it all these years?) Anyway, Harry has shown that he can perform some pretty lofty spells without his wand, like when he blew up Aunt Marge in PoA. Letting the boa constrictor out of itits glass cage in PS/SS was also a clear indication of his developing skills. And in OotP when Harry dropped his wand in Magnolia Crescent he was able to light his wand without holding it. I have a feeling we've not seen the last of Harry's wandless magical powers. We, and Harry, are constantly being reminded that he has his mother's eyes. I'm taking the meaning of this a little more literal than just heredity and wondering if having Lily's eyes allows him to see beyond what is visible to everyone else? When his mother died to save him, did she too transfer part of herself to him? Will he be able to see what she sees now from wherever she is? Will he be able to see what she saw before she died? Did she have some magic she could perform with only her eyes? I'm sure all of these points are worth a closer look-see. Harry's and Ron's Tea Leaves Predictions
In PoA when Harry and Ron are in Professor Trelawney's classroom reading tea leaves, Ron tells Harry he sees either a "bowler hat" or an "acorn" depending on how he looked at it. If we take a closer look we might see that the bowler could represent three people Harry would be dealing with and who would definitely have an impact upon his life: Cornelius Fudge, Minister of Magic; the fake Mad Eye Moody aka Barty Crouch Jr., and the real Mad Eye Moody. (Peeves also sports a bowler, but I'm not counting him right now.) If we consider what "Unfogging the Future" says about acorns being "a windfall"of "unexpected gold" then in hindsight the Fake Mad Eye Moody's involvement assured that Harry would win the Tri-Wizard Tournament and Fudge did give him the 1000 galleons prize money. Trelawney also sees a "falcon" in Harry's cup but considering her eyesight it might really symbolize an "eagle owl". Hmm. Let's think. Can you answer this riddle? Do you-know-who is associated with Eagle Owls? I don't want to mention his name but I'm sure you know who is you- know-who. And does the fact that we don't like to say his name make him an unspeakable or perhaps an “unmentionable”? Won't go there. Back to Harry tea reading... And last but definitely not least, we see the shape of a vicious looking dog, "the grim," which is a foreshadowing of death. But it could also simply mean the animagus, Sirius Black. It sounds to me like Harry had a pretty savvy cup of tea. As for Ron's cup of predictions, Harry states in PoA that he sees "a load of soggy brown stuff." Well aside from the obvious wet glob of tea leaves, could there be a bog in Ron's future. He'd better beware of Hinkypunks. Harry continues to tell Ron that there is a "crooked sort of cross" which means "trials and suffering." I have a feeling that Ron and all the " Weasley's may have some dark days ahead of them but that "the sun" will eventually shine again and they will be glowing in its light. I think that it also means that throughout the ups and downs, Ron's jokes will keep spirits bright. He does have a pretty sunny disposition. Harry's Natural Flying Abilities
Remember Norbert, the Hungarian Horntail that Hagrid hatched out of an egg in PS/SS? Charlie Weasley took Norbert, if you'll recall, back to Romania to live with other dragons. I can't help thinking that Norbert and Hagrid will have a family reunion and that baby Norbert will happily remember his 'mummy'. Hold on, I'm making a sudden left turn... It's an established fact that Harry is an excellent broom flyer. He's also proven he can ride centaurs, hippogriffs and thestrals. Now, except for centaurs, what do brooms, hippogriffs, thestrals, and dragons all have in common? Yes, yes, they all fly. Not to put myself in the hot seat, but I really think that the next natural course in Harry's flying partners will be Harry taking to the skies with Norbert. CHARGE AND FIRE!!!! Hufflepuff's are known for being loyal friends and hard workers. Helga was the founder of Hufflepuff House way back when. She left behind a silver cup with an engraved badger on it, but where is the cup now? Tom Riddle killed Hepzibah Smith so he could steal it and make a Horcrux out of it. Well, just a warning, whoever finds it should be very careful because the docile looking badger could bestow a very nasty, cursed bite. Remember Cedric Diggory.
Hermione is incredibly intelligent and as Lupin says in PoA, she's the cleverest witch of her age. There's not a book she hasn't read and memorized. In fact, she's quite handy to have around, especially in a tight spot like when you're being squeezed by Devil's Snare. But at the same time our Hermione is very vulnerable too. In a high stress situation she doesn't usually keep her cool as well as Harry. She doesn't like flying on Hippogriffs or Thestrals, and I don't think she has mastered flying her broom. She's also not fond of giants, although I'm sure she will form a closer attachment to Grawp by the time she’s finished Hogwarts. As other HP fans have noted Hermione shares her name with the Queen in Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale. In this wonderful story, Queen Hermione is magically transformed into a statue for 20 years before the spell is broken and she is once more returned to her living self. In CoS, Hermione is also transformed into a statue when she is petrified by the Basilisk. Fortunately, Madame Sprout revived her with a potion made from the Mandrake plant. Hermione's parents are muggles, not to mention dentists. I worry about them. They don't read The Daily Prophet so they are not really aware of all that's going on in the magical world and I'm not sure the Hermione gives them many details. Just being muggles is enough to put them in danger of Death Eaters and Voldemort.
Hermione has learned to knit just like Mrs. Weasley and Mrs. Figg. She's getting very good at knitting elf hats with ear holes. Interesting that Dobby also knits. Right now my brows are knitted together as I am trying to figure out what all this knitting will turn out to mean. I have a feeling we have not seen the last of the girls dormitory stairs turning into a slide when a boy tries to climb them. Hermione and Ginny have a good relationship and they do seem to share secrets. Hermione knows who Ginny has been dating. Does Ginny know that Hermione likes Ron? What are Hermione's true feelings for Victor Krum? She likes him, but is there more to it? Victor is a nice guy, but what's his real purpose? Could he too be bait... shark bait? I could write a book or at least several pages of parchment... and I'm sure Hermione will read it when I do. Please check back later for the next chapter.
First off, we got the Gryffindor ghost, Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington or just Nearly Headless Nick. I have given Nick his own section where I look a little closer at his soul-bearing.
Hufflepuff's ghost du jour is the Fat Friar. He reminds me a lot of another famous or infamous paunchy padre who made merry in Sherwood Forest. Maybe his brother? (Pun intended.) If you recall, Friar Tuck was a pretty clever chap who knew just how far he could bend the almighty rules. I wonder if Hogwarts Friar has the same talent?
Beware the Bloody Baron, the Slytherin spook. He's certainly appears to be the ghoul in charge. I wouldn't want to meet him when he's on a rampage.
Will we ever meet the Ravenclaw spirit? I think it's a woman but as yet she's not only faceless, but also headless, bodiless and nameless. Was there her in the 1st Harry Potter movie floating arm in arm with Nick?
Peeves may not technically be a ghost since he is technically a poltergeist but regardless he's a pesky pest and only heeds the warnings of the Bloody Baron and Dumbledore. He is blatantly absent from the Harry Potter films so I am guessing he really isn't vital to the ghost army I have a feeling is being recruited for the next to books.
Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore is in charge of the Headless Hunt. Poor Sir Nicholas never seems to get a head in convincing Sir Patrick he should be allowed to join the fun. Not sure if he'll be part of the G.A. (Ghost Army). If he is then maybe he'll be leading the Calvary. Other nameless ghosts floating through walls, doors, and students.
And last, but never least, is Harry's biggest haunting fan, Moaning Myrtle. I've given Myrtle her own soapbox section with lots more insight about our ghost girl.
… friend of the great and near great? Horace likes to feel famous and important, not because he is or could be, but by keeping company with those who have become famous and important. Harry obviously fits Slughorn’s criteria for who’s who in the wizarding world, especially since Harry is also known as the boy who lived, and even more, the Chosen One. Harry, on the other hand, is not that impressed with the new Potions teacher (HBP) but does prefer him to Snape a thousand fold.
Slughorn is, indeed, a talented potions master and wizard, and may be even more important than even he realizes by Harry’s seventh years. Although he’d much rather be relaxing in a cushy, over-stuffed chair, entertaining Ministry friends, at Dumbledore’s request (and Harry’s presence) Horace returned to Hogwarts to teach in Harry’s 6th year. And by the end of Harry’s 6th year, Slughorn has not only taken over Snape’s potions classes but Severus’s post as Head of Slytherin House!
Will Slughorn return to Howarts in book 7? Yes, I think he will. It is, after all, safer than hiding out in vacationing muggle houses every other week. Will he teach potions? Yes, probably. Can we expect anything extraordinary from our slugbug? Well, considering he’s the one who told Tom Riddle about Horcruxes, I should hope not. But he may know a few redeeming potions, and that would be a good thing.
