.... Or to Hagrid, Olympe, the girl he fancies. Madame Maxime
is, like Hagrid, half giant, although we aren't privy to which of her parents
was the giant. Maybe she has a full-blooded half-sister she will introduce to
Grawp.
Will Hagrid's and Olympe's romantic relationship grow? If I gaze
into Professor Trelawney's crystal ball giant-sized hearts and flowers, and
maybe even a wedding?
As far as Madame
Maxime's assistance in the war with Voldemort, remember that she is the
headmistress of another school of witches and wizards, all of whom could be
called forth to lend their beau batons.
Head of Gryffindor house, Professor McGonagall is stern in
appearance and strict in actions yet she does have a soft, sensitive spot right
where her heart is. She transfigures herself into a cat, an animal of stealth
and cunning that is also known for purring. Her leadership qualities abound and
Dumbledore knows that if he is called away from his duties as Headmaster at
Hogwarts he can count on Minerva to carry the load without complaint or
compunction. True to her Roman Goddess namesake, Professor McGonagall is a
woman of strength, strategy, and wisdom. She sounds like a terrific general to
have on our side in a war.
Interesting to note that both she and Dumbledore are/were the
Transfiguration teachers at Hogwarts. McGonagall has been teaching
transfiguration for 34 years as of Harry’s 5th year and it seems
apparent that she took over the position when Dumbledore was appointed
Headmaster. Will she continue to teach or move to her new office up the
winding staircase behind the stone gargoyle in Harry’s 7th year at
Hogwarts?
When Harry comes to her to discuss his career choice of being an
auror she swears to help him achieve his goal by hook or by crook. And I just
wonder if Professor McGonagall (or Tonks) will help Harry realize he is a
metamorphagus, if he is.
Will McGonagall survive to the end of the series? Yes, I think
she will. Once again I fall back to her Roman/Greek goddess persona. I feel
she’s got a lot yet to do and she will have to stay strong in order to see it
done.
I also think she will be confronted by the poisonous toad,
Umbridge, in the last book. They have unfinished business from GOF to resolve
including the attack on McGonagall the night Hagrid was to be sacked and a show
of stunning spells struck our Headmistress. She recovered but I don’t think
she’ll let that one slide under the drawbridge.

MOANING MYRTLE
Her name conjures up a myriad of gloomy descriptions but I just
love her anyway. Nevertheless here are a few for your illumination: the
obvious one is that a myrtle plant is a tree so a “moaning myrtle” reminds us of
another tree – the weeping willow. Taking a leaf out of Hermione’s book I did
some further reading and found out that a myrtle plant is also known as
“loosestrife” and our girl certainly lets her strife run loose. There are two
kinds of loosestrife plants, both fit Myrtle. The first is a wild marsh plant
and flourishes in the wetlands, as does Myrtle in her bathroom. The second is
called “spiked” loosestrife and is considered an annoying weed. Well, I’m sure
Olive Hornsby would agree that Myrtle certainly annoyed her.
But let’s move on. What can we expect from Moaning Myrtle in the
last two HP books? Since she’s got a crush on Harry there’s more than a ghost
of a chance that she will come to his aid again or perhaps another young wizard
will dazzle Miss Myrtle. She is a wishy-washy ghost (and it’s not because she
lives in a toilet). Up to HBP she has only had eyes for Harry… but now Harry
has a rival with blonde hair, a pointy face, and Slytherin robes. If I were
going to create a lover’s triangle, who would Harry’s rival (okay, pseudo-rival)
be? Of course, Mr. Charm, himself, Draco Malfoy. Myrtle helped Harry before in
Chamber of Secrets and Goblet of Fire, but a girl ghost scorned is a scary
apparition, indeed.
Being a ghost she has access to places in Hogwarts that Harry
doesn’t like the girl’s dormitory (…remember the slide), the prefect’s bathroom,
or Dumbledore’s office (in the case that Harry doesn’t know the new password),
and even maybe mirrors or veils. The question of whether she can leave Hogwarts
is still floating around in the u-bend. (Gross.) Remember she said she was
ordered back to Hogwarts grounds because she had been haunting Olive Hornsby?
So who can allow her to leave? Dumbledore? Or is this a Ministry of Magic
Decree?
Speaking of prefects’ bathrooms, we know Myrtle sometimes goes to
the boys’ prefect bathroom since she was there when Harry was trying to figure
out the egg riddle in GoF. And she admitted to him of going there at other
times. Now that Ron is a prefect (OotP), has she been spying on him? Or Draco?
Let’s hope they don’t burst each other’s bubbles.
What was Myrtle’s last name? It may not matter one iota but I’m
just curious.
Molly Weasley
Molly Weasley is a doting mum and a take-no-guff master and
commander of the Weasley family. Yes, she mollycoddles but her actions are
based on pure loving emotion. While this is good in regards to her seeing to
the needs of her family and their friends, she sometimes lets her emotions carry
her away to her own misgivings and regrets. Case in point: she angrily sent
Fred and George off to the Quidditch World Cup then fretted and moaned that she
might never see them alive again when she heard of all the misdoings going on at
the event (GoF). Another example is when she tried to get rid of the Boggart in
Sirius’s house (OotP). It read her fear of losing her husband, children, and
Harry by some horrible end, and Molly couldn’t pull herself free of its taunts.
In her defense Molly’s hysterical fears are not idle imaginings and could very
well happen. Gulp. It’s just that left on her own to delve into her own fears
she becomes a very fragile person. To Mrs. Weasley’s credit, on the other hand,
she took total control of the situation when she found out Voldemort/Nagini
attacked Arthur. When an actual life-threatening crisis occurs she buries her
hysterics and is once more the commander in charge.
So how will Molly react to probably devastating events in the HBP
and book 7? She is a survivor. She is stronger than she appears. She will be
the one to keep the troops fed, clothed, comforted, and definitely in line. And
I wouldn’t be surprised to see her filing into ranks with Fred and George to
save Arthur, Percy, Bill, Charlie, Ginny, and Hermione from Azkaban, Death
Eaters, or other evil peril. I think we’ll let her leave the Dementors and
Voldemort to Harry, however.
Molly knits many jumpers/sweaters. Hermione knits hats. Dobby
knits socks. Even Hagrid knits! Besides opening a clothing store, why else
would this be significant? If pooled together, what could they knit as one
group? A web? A giant invisibility afghan? Hmmm.
MUNDUNGUS FLETCHER
Mundungus is the
dodgy member of the Order of the Phoenix. He steals, buys, and sells on the
black market but does give his allegiance to Dumbledore. He spies for the Order
by dressing like a shrouded witch to disguise himself now that the invisibility
cloak he was using disappeared when Sturgeous Podmore was taken to Azkaban. By
the way, who has that invisibility cloak now?
In OotP, Mundungus’
sticky fingers were tempted by the Black family heirloom silver mugs, and in HBP
his temptation own out. What else did he probably take from the Black estate?
A silver locket engraved with the initials “S.S.” perhaps? And if he did happen
to pinch such a trinket, what did he do with it? Sell it? Hide it? Maybe we
should ask the Hog’s Head barman.
Now, Mundungus has
landed himself in a cell in Azkaban and his sticky fingers seem to be pointing
to a very sticky situation in the last HP book.
