Professor Trelawney wears very, VERY thick glasses and if you
have read my thoughts in the section "The Mirror of Erised and Other Looking
Glasses" in
MAGICAL MISCELLANY you would know that
it's my theory that most of the people in the HP books who wear glasses have
second site, or at least the ability to see beyond what's in everyone else's
plain view. Even though she is as blind as a bat when it comes to her physical
range of vision, Miss Trelawney is a true seer. I know that's hard for many to
envision but she does have two credible and profound prophecies to date. All of
her other so- called predictions seem like a lot of fluff and stuff,
nevertheless, she really deserves an award for her incredible dramatic
interpretations. And if you strip away the grease paint and rouge I'm sure
you'll agree that our Divination teacher has divined more than mere melodrama.
Why is it important
for Dumbledore to allow Sybill to stay at Hogwarts? Well, as long as she stays
at Hogwarts then she is in Dumbledore’s protection and Voldemort can't touch
her. (Remind you of someone else who has to stay in a certain locale to be
protected from the Dark Lord?) If Voldemort ever got his hands on our mystic
miss he might just be able to glean from her foggy brain the original prophecy
regarding him and Harry. She'd better stay in her tower where it's safe.
And speaking of towers, in HBP we read that Professor Trelawney is lamenting
over what she has seen in her deck of Tarot cards. She refers to the Tower
card. The picture on that particular card shows a tall tower. Lighting flashes
and appears to have struck the tower as red flames shower the sky. The figure
of a man is tragically depicted falling from the tower. Divination of the card
refers to a tragic event about to happen… too bad nobody listens to ol’ Sybill…

reading my Tea Leaves. I’ll tell you what they said after I have another cup to
wash it all down.
